In vitro
Literally "in glass" — experiments on cells or tissues outside a living organism.
In plain terms
In vitro results say what a compound can do to cells at a chosen concentration. They cannot say whether that concentration is achievable in a living body, or whether the compound survives long enough to reach the tissue at all.
