Peptide
Epitalon
Epitalon is used or studied for potential longevity effects and related immune, inflamation and longevity goals. Potential benefits and safety depend on indication, formulation, dose, and medical supervision.
In depth
What it is
Epitalon (also spelled Epithalon) is a synthetic tetrapeptide (sequence Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) developed by researchers at the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology, based on extracts from the pineal gland. In vitro studies on human cell lines show it can activate telomerase and elongate telomeres, the structures associated with cellular aging.
What the research shows
Foundational evidence is animal-based: a landmark study found the parent compound epithalamin extended mean lifespan by 11 to 31 percent across fruit flies, mice, and rats. More recent in vitro work confirms telomerase-related effects in human cell cultures.
Human observations beyond cell-culture work are mostly small, open-label studies from Russian institutions looking at sleep, melatonin rhythm, and other age-related markers, generally without blinding or placebo controls. No completed Phase 2 or Phase 3 controlled human trial has been published in a peer-reviewed, PubMed-indexed journal, so claims about lifespan extension in humans remain unproven.
Safety and who should avoid it
Human safety data is minimal, and most research originates from a small number of labs, concentrated in Russia, limiting independent replication. It should be treated as an experimental research compound rather than an established anti-aging therapy.

Frequently asked questions
Does Epitalon actually extend lifespan in humans?
Animal studies show lifespan extension with the parent compound epithalamin, and human cell cultures show telomerase activation, but no completed controlled human trial has confirmed lifespan extension in people.
Is Epitalon FDA approved?
No. It is not approved for any use and has no established clinical dosing.
Who developed Epitalon?
Russian gerontologist Vladimir Khavinson, building on decades of research into the pineal peptide epithalamin.
