In depth

How it works

LL-37 is the only cathelicidin-family antimicrobial peptide produced naturally in humans, released by neutrophils, macrophages, and epithelial cells. It combines direct antimicrobial and anti-biofilm activity with signaling roles in immune cell recruitment and tissue repair.

What the research shows

In vitro and animal wound models show LL-37 improving re-epithelialization and granulation tissue formation, and it is more strongly expressed at the edges of healing acute wounds than in chronic, non-healing wounds. Direct human clinical trial evidence remains limited, with most current support coming from preclinical research rather than completed human trials.

Safety and who should avoid it

As a naturally occurring immune peptide, exogenous LL-37 for therapeutic use is still considered experimental in humans, and it should be approached cautiously by anyone with an autoimmune or chronic inflammatory condition.
