Off-label use
Prescribing an approved drug for an indication, dose, or population other than the one it was approved for.
In plain terms
Off-label prescribing is legal, common, and often well justified — much of paediatrics runs on it. What it is not is unregulated: the drug itself remains an approved product, manufactured under inspection, with a known identity.
This distinguishes off-label use of an approved drug from use of an unapproved one. The two are frequently conflated in online discussion, and they are not remotely the same risk.
