Lipolysis
The breakdown of stored triglycerides into fatty acids that can be used for energy.
In plain terms
Lipolysis is frequently invoked in marketing as though it were equivalent to fat loss. It is not. Fatty acids released but not oxidised are simply re-esterified and stored again. Net fat loss requires an energy deficit, whatever the mechanism releasing the fat.
Why it matters
A compound that "increases lipolysis" has not been shown to reduce fat mass unless a study measured fat mass.
