Neither participants nor investigators know who received the drug, preventing expectation from shaping the results.

In plain terms

Blinding protects against both the participant’s expectations and the investigator’s. Unblinded outcome assessment reliably inflates effect sizes, particularly where the outcome requires a judgement call.
