Dead space

Also known as: dead volume · residual volume

The liquid left in the syringe hub and needle after the plunger is fully depressed.

In plain terms

On small doses, dead space is a proportionally large loss. A low-dead-space syringe with a fixed needle retains only a few microlitres; a detachable-needle syringe can hold thirty or more, which matters when the whole dose is a tenth of a millilitre.
