Confident claims derived from gym-floor tradition and personal experience rather than controlled evidence.

In plain terms

Used self-deprecatingly and as an insult, often accurately in both cases. The characteristic failure is not that the claims are always wrong — some turn out right — but that the method cannot distinguish the right ones from the wrong ones.
