Active pharmaceutical ingredient — the raw drug substance, before it is formulated into a finished product.
In plain terms
A finished product cannot be cleaner than the ingredient it starts from. FDA has warned that some compounders use API imported from facilities it has never inspected — the quality of the compounding cannot recover what the raw material lacked.
